Why does “SOS System Limited Functionality” warning message pop up
When this error code appears, it’s typically due to the telematics battery needing replacement in the telematics module. The part required is a battery pack (JLR part code – LR046049). This battery is widely available from various retailers online and is priced around £44.

JLR quoted me £170 to replace the battery which I thought was a bit excessive. So I decided to buy the battery myself and have my independent mechanic replace it for me.
Locating the Battery
A quick search on forums and on Youtube shows that a lot of Range Rover Sport L494 owners are left searching for the battery unit in different places. For our RRS 2017 L494, the correct location was behind the side panel above the left rear wheel.

Replacing the Battery
The replacement process is straightforward. There is no need to remove the entire side panel or airbag covers. Start by peeling back the rubber door seal near the panel. Once the seal is out of the way, the plastic panel can be gently pulled apart just enough to access the battery housing.
Although the space is tight, using a right angle phillips screwdriver does the trick for easy removal of the battery cover and replacement of the battery. This method is quick and avoids the need to dismantle more of the interior panelling than necessary which can be a bit time consuming.

Step by step video
Here’s a step by step detailed video of the process. It took just under 10 minutes to replace the battery!
Clearing SOS system limited functionality warning message
After the new battery is installed, taking the vehicle for a short drive should clear the error code automatically, restoring the system to full functionality. If the error message is still there, you may need to reset the error log with an OBD module or have JLR clear it for you when your next service is due or you can find an independent JLR specialist who can do it too.
